Utah is definitely one of our favorite states, and we truly believe it’s utterly underrated.
When people think of Utah, images of sand, red-colored rocks, arid landscapes, dinosaur bones, and iconic national parks usually come to mind. And while all of that is very real and very impressive, Utah has so much more to offer. This state is layered, diverse, and endlessly adventurous — and visiting it should absolutely be on every adventurous traveler’s bucket list.
Utah is also one of the most beautiful and underrated places we’ve ever been. We love getting lost in its red landscapes, exploring Salt Lake City, discovering small towns, camping under open skies, and wandering through national parks that make you feel like you’ve stepped onto another planet.
We’ve explored Utah over several smaller trips, and we’ve visited all of the destinations you’ll see below. Whether you’re planning a 10-day road trip to see as much as possible, or prefer shorter weekend trips where you focus on one area at a time, this post will work for you.

Arches National Park
Arches National Park is one of the coolest and most fun national parks we’ve ever visited. The moment you enter, it feels like you’ve landed on another planet. The martian-like landscape, the towering arches, and the endless red rock formations are absolutely magnificent.
The hikes here are incredible and lead to some truly spectacular views. Canyons stretch out in every direction, colors shift with the light, and the connection to the earth feels incredibly strong.
Standing beneath these massive stone arches puts everything into perspective. You suddenly understand how vast the world around you is — and how small we are within it. Exploring Arches is both humbling and energizing, and if you’re looking for adventure, sunshine, and movement, this is the place to do it.
We’ve found ourselves trying to stretch our time when we are in Arches National Park. Most of the time, we feel like there is never enough time. We try to make every second count and enjoy the moment we have, being present and conscious of what is right in front of us.
But the truth is that when you are there, you stop.
You linger a little longer within your head. You find yourself surrounded by incredible rock formations, canyons, and valleys — things that feel unexplainable — and you start wondering. You suddenly stop hiking to take a seat on the warm stones. You look, and you imagine. You picture how this place was formed, carved by water millions of years ago — without rush, patiently, slowly — the way all monumental things are created.
Every piece, every inch, has a story and something to say. But only those who stay still, and are willing to listen, are the ones being shaped.
You stare at the vast landscape unfolding in front of you, and either little movies start playing in your head, or you empty your thoughts into it completely.
Being in Arches doesn’t just show you beauty — it shows you reflection. There is so much value in slowing down, taking a seat, observing, staying still, and allowing yourself to simply be. A quiet pause in the middle of all that immensity.
Arches isn’t a place you rush through.
It’s a place you sit with.

One of the best things about Salt Lake City is how much there is to do — without the overwhelming crowds. The city feels calm, approachable, and easy to enjoy at your own pace.
It’s very walkable, and if you want to cover more ground, grabbing a scooter or e-bike makes getting around even more fun. From outdoor access to local spots and nearby escapes, Salt Lake City works perfectly as both a destination and a base for exploring the rest of the state.
If you find yourself spending time in Salt Lake City, one of the simplest and most rewarding things you can do is walk up to the Utah State Capitol.
You can stroll there at your own pace, either joining a guided walking tour or doing a self-guided one — both feel equally meaningful. We absolutely loved stepping inside and wandering through the building, taking our time to admire the details and the quiet grandeur of the space. The views from the Capitol windows are stunning, opening up to the city below and the mountains beyond, and they offer a beautiful perspective on just how closely Salt Lake City is woven into its surrounding landscape.
It’s the kind of experience that doesn’t require planning or rushing — just curiosity and a willingness to slow down, even for a moment.
Salt Lake City
Another part of Salt Lake City that we’re always drawn to is how peaceful it can feel when you step just slightly away from the busier streets.
One of those places for us is Liberty Park, especially the Tracy Aviary. There’s something incredibly grounding about being there — the pace slows, the noise softens, and everything feels steady and calm.
Walking through the aviary is both beautiful and enjoyable in a quiet, almost meditative way. The open spaces, the sounds of birds, and the gentle rhythm of people moving through the paths create an atmosphere that feels restorative rather than stimulating. It’s the kind of place where conversation flows easily, or where silence feels just as comfortable.
For us, Liberty Park and the aviary are reminders that Salt Lake City isn’t just a gateway to Utah’s wild landscapes — it also offers moments of stillness right in the heart of the city.
We also love spending time at the Clark Planetarium.
It’s filled with fun, small things to explore at your own pace, and the astronomical presentations and movies are the kind that truly pull you out of the everyday for a while. Sitting back and letting yourself drift through space, stars, and distant worlds feels almost meditative — especially after days spent hiking, driving, and exploring the outdoors.
It’s a simple but meaningful contrast: grounding yourself in Utah’s vast landscapes during the day, then drifting into the cosmos for an hour or two. For us, it’s another reminder that Salt Lake City offers not just access to nature, but moments of wonder and curiosity that feel quietly romantic in their own way.

We honestly didn’t know what to expect when we decided to take a random weekend camping trip to Utah and discovered Flaming Gorge — but it completely surprised us.
Flaming Gorge is a massive reservoir that stretches across the border of Wyoming and Utah. It offers boating, fishing, water skiing, house boating, paddle boarding, kayaking, and more. Surrounding the water are multiple camping areas where you can hike, stay overnight, and truly disconnect.
One of the best parts of camping here is that many sites sit higher up, giving you breathtaking views overlooking the water. These elevated spots make for some of the most stunning sunrises and sunsets we’ve ever seen.
We arrived at our campsite, found the perfect spot, and immediately set up camp. Wanting to add a little extra adventure to the weekend, we brought our kayak — and we can’t recommend this enough, especially for couples. Kayaking allows you to explore small islands, tuck into hidden corners of the reservoir, and even find perfect little picnic spots that feel completely your own.
This felt like one of the most epic camping trips we could’ve ever asked for. Camping in a pine forest in Utah — something we would’ve never believed possible if we hadn’t experienced it ourselves. Sleeping under a canopy of pines, finding small openings where we could see the stars at night, hiking just enough to find the perfect spot to sit down and enjoy the most beautiful sunset overlooking the gorge.
Being able to wake up, have a cup of coffee and breakfast, then head down to the water and spend the entire day kayaking, swimming, and jumping in — having the kind of fun you used to have when you were just a kid.
That’s the kind of place this is. A place where you can find joy you didn’t know was still there. A place to share not just simple experiences, but to create memories and deepen the connection with the one you love even more.
The kind of memory that stays: One of our absolute favorite diners in the U.S. happened on this trip — simple, delicious, and unforgettable.
On the way to Flaming Gorge from Colorado, we stopped at Betty’s Cafe in Vernal, Utah, and it instantly became one of our favorite diners in the U.S. The food is excellent, the atmosphere inviting and cozy, and the smell of just‑made breakfast lingers through the whole place, making your mouth water. This spot doesn’t lack quality or quantity at all.

Why Utah Keeps Calling Us Back
Utah is the kind of place you can visit over and over again, and each time it shows you something new. Whether you’re hiking through arches that feel otherworldly, kayaking across quiet blue water, walking a peaceful city, or camping beneath endless stars, Utah has a way of grounding you while still fueling your sense of adventure.
It’s a state that rewards curiosity — and one we’ll never stop returning to.

Other highlights worth mentioning
Bites in Salt Lake City
Feldman's Deli: One of the best lunch spots in Salt Lake and a phenomenal deli where we strongly recommend getting the Rachel Combo—a 1/2 pound of corned beef and pastrami sandwich with coleslaw and cheese in between fresh soft rye bread.
Tuscany Restaurant: One of our favorite restaurants in Salt Lake. We never skip this place when we’re in the area. Perfect romantic atmosphere, excellent food, and awesome service.
Dolcetti Gelato: Delicious gelato and a fun, picture‑perfect spot. We loved their gelato, the atmosphere, and the décor — make sure to take your time and take it all in.
Ivy & Varley: The highlight here is the Grilled Beet Hummus—absolutely AMAZING hummus.
The Park Café: Egg‑cellent place for breakfast. It’s busy on weekends, so make sure to get there early or be ready to wait.
Bites in Moab
Sweet Cravings Bakery + Bistro: We got sandwiches and they were fabulous. The “Capone Sub” was super tasty, but the star of the show was the “Roast Beef Sammy.” THIS IS THE SANDWICH I DREAM OF EVERY TIME I WANT A ROAST BEEF SANDWICH.
